High Court orders delayed telecast on Doordarshan

The Delhi High Court today said that public broadcaster Prasar Bharati will telecast the India West Indies ODI series on Doordarshan with a delay of seven minutes.
Hearing a petition filed by Nimbus Television, challenging a government memorandum to allow the sharing of live feed of the series with Prasar Bharati, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said a delayed telecast of seven minutes, which consumes two overs, will solve the purpose in the public interest. The live commentary would be broadcast from All India Radio (AIR).
Doordarshan did not telecast the first one-day international between India and the West Indies that was played in Nagpur on Sunday as talks between Prasar Bharati and Nimbus, the company with the broadcasting rights for the four-match series, collapsed on January 20. This stalemate deprived over 50 million TV viewers across the country from watching the match. The remaining three matches will be played in Cuttack on January 24, in Chennai on January 27 and in Baroda on January 31.

Prasar Bharati, Nimbus talks on cricket telecast fail

The India West Indies tie Wednesday will remain a no show for millions of Doordarshan viewers as the second round of talks between Nimbus Communication, which owns the telecast rights, and the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati failed Monday
The two sides stuck to their positions. Cricket buffs in the country were eagerly awaiting a positive outcome of the talks as they missed out on India's spectacular victory over the visitors at Nagpur Sunday as neither Doordarshan run by the Prasar Bharati nor any of the DTH content providers had telecast rights. Nimbus Communications last year purchased the telecast rights of all cricket matches held under the auspices of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) till 2010 for $612 million.
Nimbus, meanwhile, approached the Delhi High Court with a petition challenging the government's guidelines to share the live feed of the matches with the Prasar Bharati. The court will hear the plea Tuesday. After the breakdown of the latest round of negotiations, Prasar Bharati was banking on the possibility of the court seeing its point of view and prevailing upon the private firm to provide live coverage of the one-day international tie in Cuttack Wednesday. Nimbus wanted Prasar Bharati to exclude Doordarshan's free-to-air DTH-DD Direct Plus from the live feed sharing agreement. But none of the offers was acceptable to Prasar Bharati.
Before the talks, Nimbus Communications senior vice president (marketing) Yannick Colaco said: "Nimbus will meet with Prasar Bharati to prevail upon it to take a constructive approach that respects the commercial rights of other parties and yet enables Doordarshan and All India Radio to serve those members of the public who do not have access to cable TV or any form of TV." The Prasar Bharati, however, has so far taken cover behind the guidelines issued by the information and broadcasting ministry that make it obligatory for the content providing companies to share all sports programmes of national importance with Doordarshan in larger public interest.
